Venture Trips are Challenging and Fun

  • Trips are led by highly qualified staff that not only help you have an exciting adventure, but also facilitate learning from the experience. Our program is accredited by the Association for Experiential Education and therefore adheres to high standards of safety. The challenges encountered on trips are intended to move you beyond your ‘comfort zone' and into areas of personal growth and empowerment. We also try to provide opportunities for reflection about your trip experiences.
  • No previous experience is necessary.
  • Venture staff will provide instruction to teach you the skills needed for a successful trip. Most of our trips are not overly rigorous unless listed as so in the trip description. Individuals in general good health should do fine. However, it is a good idea to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 4-5 days per week as a way to be in shape which will help you to feel more comfortable with the level of activity that does occur on most trips.

Pre-Trip Meetings

  • There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting the week of each trip which takes place in the Venture office. Check the schedule for dates and times. During this time we help prepare you for your experience by discussing the details of the trip including personal goals, menu planning, itinerary and departure time, weather potential and appropriate clothing. Additional time may be spent practicing specific skills such as kayaking in the pool and belaying at the climbing wall. We ask that each participant sign a liability waiver form and fill out a medical history form. This helps you to understand the rigorous nature of the experience and helps us to prevent possible accidents or injuries. If you are unable to attend the orientation due to a conflict, it is important that you call the Venture office and let us know. It is also your responsibility to obtain any information you may have missed from the orientation. All meetings start in the Venture Office. Please note: We reserve the option of dropping you from your trip if you do not attend the pre-trip meeting and do not inform us ahead of time of your anticipated absence.

  • Whatever the workshop activity, we are serious about safety in all that we do. We cannot guarantee total protection from all risks. Many of our trips involve self-sufficient travel in primitive outdoor settings in which professional medical assistance may be hours or even days away. Outdoor settings present some inherent dangers which may result in accidents. We use certain safety procedures to provide some protection against risks. These include the use of safety equipment, specific ways of doing things and modifying plans to avoid dangers. We expect you to be serious about safety by following safety rules, taking responsibility for avoiding or minimizing risks, staying alert and using good judgment or asking questions about things you don't understand, and recognizing that your individual decisions also have an impact on the group as a whole. To emphasize these points, we will ask you to sign a Venture Release and Hold Harmless Agreement Waiver form and complete a Medical History form at the pre-trip meeting.

A Group Experience

  • We are not a guide service, so everyone helps out with group tasks such as setting up tents, cooking, and cleaning. Working together in this way creates a valuable dynamic of teamwork and trusting others. During a Venture trip, there are many opportunities for involvement in group decision making and leadership roles. We value cooperation and support through shared decision making and ask that people remain flexible and willing to go along with the majority when consensus cannot be reached.

Alcohol & Drug Use

  • As part of our healthy lifestyle philosophy, and because of the safety considerations involved, alcohol and consciousness-altering drugs are prohibited. We also request that people refrain from using tobacco in any form for the length of the workshop.

Equipment Use

  • Food, transportation and equipment are included in the cost of the trip. The workshop fee is all inclusive (except meals while on the road.) We ask that all participants treat the provided equipment with respect and care because lost or damaged equipment can at best prove inconvenient and at worst become dangerous. Participants are responsible for all equipment that is issued to them. Participants will be charged for lost or damaged equipment. When the responsible party cannot be determined, the group will be asked to split the cost of the missing or damaged equipment.

Personal Gear

  • We ask that you leave radios and firearms at home, but we encourage people to bring musical instruments. Walkmans and other devices with headphones will be allowed for long trips in the van only but are inappropriate at other times. Also, please refrain from using cell phones when in the back country. Venture accepts no responsibility for personal gear that is left in the van during the trip.

Environmental Stewardship

  • The natural environment is a valuable resource that requires our care and attention. Venture practices Leave No Trace principles on our trips. Participants are asked to consciously minimize their impact on the earth by carrying out all litter, using soap only where the environment can safely dispose of it (i.e. away from water), and following other Leave No Trace guidelines. In all our activities, Venture policy is to leave the natural environment as undisturbed as possible. We also take opportunities to ‘be still' and connect with the natural world. Venture's operations on National Forest System Lands are authorized under Special Use Permit by the Pisgah National Forest.

Cancellation Policies

  • If you need to cancel your registration, we will do our best to accommodate you within the following guidelines:
  • When you sign up for a trip and pay the trip fee, $10 of that fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • 14 days+ prior to the trip: $10 is non-refundable and non-transferable. The remainder of your money can be refunded or applied to another trip within the same semester.
  • 7-13 days prior to the trip: No refund. Money, less $10, may be applied to other trips within the same semester. If applicable, difference in cost of other trip will be forfeited.
  • 0-6 days prior to trip: No refund. Money, less $10, can be applied to other trips IF YOUR SPOT CAN BE FILLED. You are encouraged to locate prospective participants to fill that slot if Venture has no waiting list.
  • Occasionally, Venture must cancel a trip due to low enrollment or environmental hazards. In that event, we try to make cancellations by the Tuesday prior to the trip. Participants receive a full refund or may apply that money to a different trip.
