The Venture Program and Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) are excited to offer SOAR Outdoor, a five-day outdoor orientation program that builds on the University-wide SOAR experience for freshmen and transfer students. The program emphasizes leadership and character formation, developing community, and life skills for success at the University and beyond.
After regular SOAR activities end, SOAR Outdoor participating students meet with Venture staff and student leaders. The participants spend five days backpacking in the mountains of western North Carolina. Venture provides most of the backpacking gear, weather-resistant clothing, and all meals and transportation during the five-day experience. The all-inclusive program costs $200 per student, which is below the average cost for programs of this nature at similar institutions. Groups are limited to eight participants per trip; four trips are planned for Summer 2014.
Like other programs of its kind, SOAR Outdoor is founded on the idea that the challenge and novel experience of outdoor orientation programs can foster the development of meaningful relationships among incoming students and their trip leaders. It is these types of relationships that have long-term impact on students’ experience at the University as well as their own personal development and growth.
We have finished an awesome SOAR Outdoor 2014 season. Dates for our 2015 programs will be posted this winter, and registration typically opens in April.
