Assistant Director for Trips
For as long as he can remember, Brian has been inspired by the outdoors and the opportunities for discovery it provides. He became immersed in outdoor activities as an undergraduate at the University of Richmond, participating in an outdoor orientation program and leading trips with the Outdoors Club, and discovered a dream to become an educator after his experience on a 28-day NOLS course in Wyoming.
After working with outdoor education organizations as a wilderness trip leader, challenge course facilitator, and environmental educator, Brian attended Appalachian State University for graduate school where he earned a Master of Arts degree in College Student Development. As a graduate assistant with Appalachian’s Outdoor Programs, Brian had the opportunity to coordinate the Blue Ridge Parkway Corps and Outing Center, train student trip leaders, and oversee the First Ascent Outdoor Orientation program.
Brian is continually amazed by transformative potential of outdoor adventure, and is passionate about utilizing the outdoors to facilitate students’ personal growth. He hopes to, one day, bottle the positive energy of students triumphantly returning from the field at the conclusion of a Venture program and to expand an already considerable repertoire of trail songs.
Brian has furthered his development as an educator through certifications with Wilderness Medical Associates, Leave No Trace, the American Mountain Guides Association, and the Professional Climbing Instructors' Association.
